Water in the Basement – Emergency Checklist
Water in the Basement – Emergency Checklist

Ensure Safety First
Turn off basement electricity at the breaker. Wear rubber boots and gloves before entering. Avoid contact with standing water if electrical outlets are submerged.
Stop the Source
Check for plumbing leaks and shut off the main water if needed. Verify the sump pump is running. Identify if the water is from outside flooding, sewer backup, or a burst pipe.
Document the Damage
Take clear photos and videos before starting cleanup. Note the date, time, and possible cause.
Remove Water Quickly
Use a wet/dry vac or portable pump. For large amounts of water, call a water mitigation service.
Dry the Space Thoroughly
Run fans and dehumidifiers continuously. Pull up wet carpet and padding. Remove damp boxes, furniture, and belongings.
Contact Insurance
Call your insurance agent as soon as possible. Provide documentation and details of the cause. Ask about coverage for repairs and prevention measures.
Investigate the Cause
Inspect gutters, downspouts, grading, and window wells. Check for cracks in foundation walls or floors. Test the sump pump and consider adding a backup system.
Prevent Future Issues
Keep gutters clean and downspouts extended away from the house. Seal any foundation cracks. Install or maintain a working sump pump with a battery or water-powered backup. Maintain proper yard grading so water flows away from the home.
