Madison, the capital city of Wisconsin, is the second largest city in the state. Its downtown sits on an isthmus between lakes Mendota and Monona and is home to the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The city's five lakes make it one of the more picturesque state capitals in the country.
The spring is when the outdoor Farmer's Market begins, where local farmers sell directly to consumers around the Capitol Square. We love the Henry Vilas Zoo, a 28-acre public zoo with no admission fee.
Kick-off the start of summer Memorial Day weekend at Brat Fest. Get on the water where you can kayak, canoe, paddleboard, fish, boat and ski. Grab a bicycle or a pair of sneakers to take the Lake Loop around Lake Monona and past the Monona Terrace for a picturesque 13-mile trip. Play golf at one of Madison’s five golf courses. Spend your evenings out on the town walking State Street for dinner, get drinks outside at the Memorial Union Terrace or to catch a performance at the Overture Center. Madison’s recreational department called MSCR, provides recreational opportunities year-round that are accessible to all ages. Past your playing days? Well then checkout the Madison Mallards at Warner Park or Forward Madison FC at historic Breese Stevens Field.
Fall is about Wisconsin Badger Football and the tailgate parties on Regent Street. Explore Olbrich Botanical Gardens, sixteen stunning acres of outdoor gardens with a Thai sala and the indoor Bolz Conservatory home to butterflies and free-flying birds.
When Winter hits you can find a Badger hockey or basketball game at the Kohl Center, go ice skating at The Edgewater, tour the Wisconsin State Capitol building, sled on one of nine notable sledding hills or view the Holiday Fantasy in Lights at Olin Park. Dare the cold as an ice fisherman or take part in the Polar Plunge to raise money for Wisconsin Special Olympic athletes.
Regardless of the season, there are many excellent restaurants, museums, music and shopping centers, yet Madison is just minutes from the beautiful rural countryside.
