NerdWallet, an online blog about everything financial, has previously ranked Madison as the city with the best quality of life in the nation and the greenest city in America. And Bloomberg ranked Wisconsin as the #10 state in the nation for volunteerism. Clearly, we've got it going on!
Now NerdWallet has published their list of top cities for young families in Wisconsin. They wanted to find the cities where young families could live afford-ably & healthily. They based their ranking on the following:
Home Affordability: They prioritized communities which are affordable (again, the focus is on YOUNG families).
Prosperity & Growth: they looked at past incomes of city residents and compared them to current incomes. They also looked at projected long-term growth.
Quality of Education: utilizing data from the site GreatSchools.org, they ranked each city by the quality of education kids are likely to receive.
Family Friendliness: No, they didn't go around meeting every family and giving them "friendliness" rankings. What they looked at was the % of school aged children in the community and the poverty rate for young children.
When all was said and done, Dane County came out with many top ranked cities! Waunakee is #3, Mount Horeb is #6, DeForest is #7, Cottage Grove is #17, Oregon is #21, Sun Prairie is #40, Monona is #83, McFarland is #86, Middleton is #89, Fitchburg is #109, & Madison is #114. So if you are looking to buy your first home, or you're starting to grow your family, this list can give you a great idea of where you can get the most bang for your buck while still living in an area which is going to be family friendly and provide a great education!
