BREAKING: Madison Announces Floating Tiny Home Community on Lake Monona

In a surprise announcement early this morning, the City of Madison unveiled plans for one of the most unique housing developments in the country: Floating Tiny Homes on Lake Monona, expected to launch Summer 2026.

City officials say the project, called Monona Micro Marina, is designed to address Madison’s growing housing shortage while embracing the city’s love for lakes, sustainability, and innovative living.

According to early details, the development will feature 48 floating tiny homes anchored just off the Lake Monona shoreline, with panoramic views of downtown Madison, the Capitol, and Monona Terrace.

Each floating home is expected to include:
320–480 sq ft modern tiny home design
Private rooftop deck with lake views
Personal kayak or paddleboard dock
Solar-powered electric systems
Composting toilets and rainwater collection
Pet-friendly community with floating dog park
Electric boat shuttle service to downtown Madison

City planners say the homes will be permanently anchored floating structures, similar to floating communities in Seattle and Vancouver, but designed specifically for Wisconsin winters.

To address concerns about ice, engineers revealed that each home will sit on adjustable hydraulic floating platforms designed to rise and fall with seasonal lake conditions. During winter, residents will still have access via heated floating walkways and a winter ice shuttle service operated by the city.

Officials say the floating homes are expected to start at:
$185,000 for interior units
$225,000 for premium Capitol-view units
$275,000 for corner units with expanded decks

Monthly HOA fees are expected to range from $225–$375/month, covering:
• Dock maintenance
• Winter ice monitoring
• Boat shuttle service
• Shared floating community space
• Trash and recycling pickup by water
